International Support for September 27 Peace Agreement
Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon "The Secretary-General congratulates the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan for signing agreements on security, the common border and economic relations. These agreements provide vital elements in building a strong foundation for a stable and prosperous future between the two countries.
The Secretary-General commends the leaders of both countries, particularly President Omar al-Bashir and President Salva Kiir, for demonstrating the statesmanship that made a comprehensive agreement possible, and for having once again chosen peace over war."
Security Council "The members of the Council warmly congratulate the leaders and negotiators on both sides for demonstrating courageous leadership to find durable solutions to the challenging disputes that divided them. These agreements represent a major breakthrough for the establishment of peace, stability and prosperity in both Sudan and South Sudan and give cause for genuine hope that the peoples of these two countries will realize the fruits of lasting peace and friendship."
Communique of Fifth Meeting of the Consultative Forum "Participants commended President Omer Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan and President Salva Kiir of South Sudan for the breakthrough achieved during the negotiations which ended today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In particular, they commended the two Presidents for demonstrating constructive leadership and political will to reach agreements on: security, border issues (including demarcation), oil, the Status of Nationals of the Other State and other economic arrangements."
"The Elders welcome warmly the historic agreements on trade, oil, border issues and the status of nationals signed by Sudan and South Sudan in Addis Ababa on 27 September. Although several crucial issues remain unresolved, overall the deal holds promise for the future safety and welfare of their respective people after months of escalating tensions."
Archbishop Desmond Tutu "In recent times, the people of both countries have faced needless hardship. The reason was a lack of trust between these people’s leaders. These agreements go a very long way to building this trust, and we pray the people will start to see the benefits as soon as possible."
Former US President Jimmy Carter "President al-Bashir and President Kiir displayed real statesmanship by overcoming their differences and reaching compromises. We hope the outstanding differences between their governments can now be addressed urgently and with equal resolve, for the sake of the people of Sudan and South Sudan."
President Barack Obama "This agreement breaks new ground in support of the international vision of two viable states at peace with each other, and represents substantial progress in resolving the outstanding security and economic issues between Sudan and South Sudan. The Sudanese and South Sudanese people who have suffered greatly through decades of conflict deserve the benefits of a lasting peace – a peace that can only be achieved through continued dialogue and negotiation, sustained implementation of the agreements reached to date, and steadfast work to resolve remaining issues."
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "I applaud today’s agreements between Sudan and South Sudan on security, oil, financial, nationality, and trade issues. This is a critical step toward the peaceful resolution of the outstanding issues, as required by the African Union Peace and Security Council Roadmap and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2046, and toward fostering a new peace, greater stability and development, and new economic partnerships."
President Jacob Zuma "I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Presidents for the leadership demonstrated by them in achieving this milestone. We applaud the leaders and express our heartfelt gratitude to all role-players and mediators who worked tirelessly through difficult times to achieve these agreements"
